President Tsai Ing-wen welcomes Taiwanese hacker team that won 3rd place at hacker convention

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) welcomed TWN48, the Taiwanese hacker team who won 3rd place at DEF CON’s Capture the Flag competition in Las Vegas last month. President Tsai congratulated the team on Monday at the presidential office on their exceptional performance and said she hoped that they can contribute to Taiwan’s digital security. 

The annual Las Vegas hacker convention DEF CON, held since 1993, hosts a digital Capture the Flag battle. TWN48, comprising of 54 students and information security experts, competed against nearly 2,000 teams from around the world and claimed 3rd place in the computer security championship.

Speaking with the team, President Tsai said she is very proud of TWN48’s performance and teamwork. Tsai added that Taiwan entered DEF CON in 2014 and won 2nd place in the Capture the Flag competition that year. She said it was exciting to see another Taiwanese team performing so well again. The President also thanked the digital affairs and education ministries, as well as the National Institute of Cyber Security, for their work on safeguarding Taiwan’s digital security.
