Thompson in Hartford to five months of imprisonment, followed five months of home detention and three years of supervised release, for defrauding Amazon.com, Inc. (“Amazon”).

The entire scheme allegedly resulted in the sale of software licenses with a retail value of over $88 million.

In this scheme, someone posing as an official of the Nigerian government, the Nigerian Central Bank, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation or one of various other businesses (usually with an African origin) contacts a foreign individual or company by fax, e-mail or regular mail, seeking assistance in the recovery of money. To the embarrassment of Nigeria’s government, this operation is estimated to be the third or fourth largest revenue source for that country’s economy.

WASHINGTON — Today (September 7, 2023), the United States, in coordination with the United Kingdom, sanctioned eleven individuals who are part of the Russia-based Trickbot cybercrime group. Russia has long been a safe haven for cybercriminals, including the Trickbot group. Today’s action was taken by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is concurrently unsealing indictments against nine individuals in connection with the Trickbot malware and Conti ransomware schemes, including seven of the individuals designated today.
